LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA, 5th Feb (EUROPA PRESS) –

Today, Monday, a canoe carrying 105 individuals was intercepted by Maritime Rescue, revealing two fatalities and one individual in serious condition during the journey towards the island of Gran Canaria, according to sources from public organizations.

The rescue operation commenced following the receipt of a report by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Las Palmas, alerting to the presence of a canoe 13 miles south of Gran Canaria.

The sea guard ‘Calíope’ was mobilised and set course for the area, successfully intercepting the canoe and confirming the presence of two deceased individuals among its occupants. Subsequently, all those rescued were transferred to the Arguineguín dock in the municipality of Mogán.

A significant medical response was deployed at the dock to attend to the occupants of the intercepted canoe, confirming the demise of two individuals. Furthermore, a male was airlifted in serious condition by a medical helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) to a hospital.

Additionally, five other individuals have received assistance at the dock, with arrangements underway for their evacuation to healthcare facilities. SUC, Primary Care, and Red Cross volunteers are actively engaged in ongoing operations in the area.
