SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, January 26. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife has appointed Eulalia García (CC), Minister of Mobility, and Águeda Fumero (PP), Minister of Social Action, as the fourth and fifth vice presidents. However, the PSOE has criticized the appointments, stating they were made “by force of motion”.

The debate took place during the plenary session on Friday following a motion from the PSOE. The motion was approved by CC and PP, with Vox abstaining. It called for the Cabildo of Tenerife to ensure equality and equal representation in all organizations affiliated with the corporation. Interestingly, the socialists self-amended the motion upon learning about the vice presidential appointments.

Councilor Marian Franquet of the PSOE emphasized that having the first female president in history is not enough. She stressed the need to promote “policies for women”, using Giorgia Meloni’s position as the Prime Minister of Italy as an example.

Franquet criticized the Cabildo for taking seven months to make the appointments, describing it as a “major error”. She expressed hope for changes in the Equality budget and measures to combat gender violence. Franquet also expressed disappointment that the president did not confront sexist comments made by Vox and outlined incidents involving other council members.

Naím Yánez (Vox) defended Meloni and criticized the socialists’ parity proposal, arguing it disregards “validity, merits, professional career, or training”. Yánez also emphasized the qualifications of the two vice presidents and criticized the PSOE for leveraging equality and feminism for political gain.

Efraín Medina (CC) highlighted Rosa Dávila’s political achievements and criticized Franquet for her behavior during past incidents, including sexist remarks directed at other council members. Yolanda Baumgartner (PP) praised the capabilities of the vice presidents, affirmed her party’s commitment to equality, and called on the socialists to act on their rhetoric.
