In a distressing incident, a man and a woman lost their lives in a canoe that was rescued on Friday by a patrol boat from the Civil Guard near the island of El Hierro. The canoe had 68 people on board, and five individuals have been hospitalized in critical condition, as reported by the rescue teams to EFE.
Today, a total of six canoes have arrived in the Canary Islands, four of which reached El Hierro and two to Tenerife, carrying a total of 311 individuals, including at least 17 minors.
The initial vessel of the day was spotted around 5:00 in the morning, prompting Salvamento Marítimo to be notified by the Civil Guard about its presence, less than a kilometer from the La Restinga mouth. The crew of the Salvamar Adhara was responsible for the rescue and safe docking of these individuals.
A total of 52 migrants, including two women and six minors, arrived apparently in good health.
The second canoe, carrying 68 people, was rescued by the Civil Guard, while the third boat held another 56 individuals who were sighted and rescued by the Guardamar Concepción Arenal.
The final canoe to reach the westernmost Canary Island, around 1:50 p.m. local time, also transported 56 sub-Saharan migrants, including a woman, all of whom appeared to be in good health and received assistance from the Río Segura patrol boat of the Civil Guard.
Additionally, another group of 37 people in a vulnerable boat landed at 9:25 in the morning near The Christians in south of Tenerife, having been sighted less than two kilometers from the coast of Las Vistas beach. This group was aided by the Salvamar Alpheratz and comprised entirely of men.
Furthermore, the Salvamar Menkalinan undertook a search for a fourth boat, detected 15 kilometers from Los Cristianos in south of Tenerife by the Bencomo Express ferry. This boat was carrying 42 sub-Saharan migrants, including eleven minors, who were later transferred to Playa San Juan in Guide of Isora.
