Proposal to Extend the Tram to the ‘Snowman’ Faces Rejection from PSOE, Supported by CC, PP, and Vox

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, January 26. (EUROPA PRESS) –

During a debate, the island groups of the Canary Coalition (CC), Popular Party (PP), and Vox have approved a motion on Friday, with the PSOE rejecting, seeking to extend Line 2 of the tram to the ‘Snowman’ area. The discussion saw a group of La Gallega residents being evicted by the president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, for displaying banners against the project.

Eulalia García (CC), the Minister of Mobility, emphasized that this extension is the “most advanced” within Metrotenerife, dismissing the inclusion of the passage through Avenida de las Hespérides – an option revoked by the Supreme Court in 2013 – and through La Gallega, as claimed by the socialists.

Garcia accused the PSOE of existing in a “parallel reality,” attempting to promote a plan not approved by the board of directors of Metrotenerife, and narrowing the new section to a mere 600 meters that barely reach Los Majuelos Avenue.

On the other hand, Manuel Fernández (PP), Minister of Industry, stated that the extension of the tram to Avenida de Los Majuelos is not under consideration, asserting the focus on “making a stop” and continuing with the planning from the previous mandate, rather than building a tram rail again fifteen years later.

Naím Yánez (Vox) emphasized the need to “distance” mobility “from political use and not to everything from the PSOE,” regarding the debate on extending along Avenida de La Gallega as a closed matter, now solely about a 600-meter extension of the line.

Yánez criticized the socialists for practicing “demagoguery” and “deceiving people,” stressing the importance of prioritizing mobility improvements.

Conversely, Manuel Martínez (PSOE) accused the island government group of aiming to “destroy” the SMEs of La Gallega with manipulative language and half-truths, urging the PP to oppose the enlargement, as it has done in the past.

Martínez asserted that the government is jeopardizing the future of La Gallega solely to justify the “commitment” to mobility, and claimed it as the “easiest and agile” way to proceed, drawing attention to the fact that the expansion reaches “La Gallega, not the Snowman.”
