The Journey of Totó, the Canarian Clown, in Uruguay

The Estación Alta International Theater Festival of Montevideo, in Uruguay, has chosen Totó, the traveling clown as the only clown performance in its extensive program. This year, the festival brings together the finest companies from Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and Spain.

The show, true to its name, brings the Canarian essence to South America, adding a new continent to its already extensive presence in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Daniel Mesa (1983), an aspiring clown from La Orotava, Tenerife, embarked on his artistic journey in his hometown at an early age. He began at the municipal music school, continued at the Tenerife Theater Network, and furthered his stage training on his new home, Gran Canaria, where he continued his acting education at the School of Actors in Canary Islands. Since 2000, he has dedicated himself to the wonderful world of clowning, proudly embracing the title of CLOWN. “I’m a clown, it’s the only thing I know how to be in my life, and it hasn’t gone badly at all”, he expresses. This year 2024 marks his 24th year adorned with his distinctive red nose, glasses, and unmistakable black bowler hat.

Four Showings in Montevideo

Totó will make his debut at the festival on Friday, February 2, at the Goes Cultural Center, breathing new life into the headquarters of the El Oriental Tram Station. On Saturday, the 3rd, the audience awaits him in the El Artesano Cultural Center, and on Sunday, he will have two shows at the Montevideo Theater Sala Lazaroff.

Daniel Mesa has proudly represented the Canarian spirit worldwide during his 20-year professional career, carving a place for himself in the challenging world of Clowns, becoming a national and international benchmark.

‘Totó, the traveling clown‘ offers a unique experience, taking the audience on a journey filled with sketches in the purest Totó clown style and, of course, with zany adventures and astonishing feats.

Carrying a suitcase brimming with humor, Totó shares his clownish madness and whims with the audience, offering a close, dynamic, mischievous, and dreamlike experience.

And as Daniel Mesa puts it, “The best thing about Totó is that he is a clown who advocates that it’s never too late to laugh, especially in these times”.
