The La Florida stew is made on Saturday in front of the soccer field

Florida celebrates its festivities in honor of San Antonio Abad and the Virgin of La Esperanza, declared of Tourist Interest of Canary Islands. The most notable events are held over the weekend, including the pilgrimage and the popular puchero, which brings together thousands of people every year who come to the neighborhood to taste this dish of traditional Canarian cuisine. This year it will take place on Saturday in a new location, on the lot located in front of the field of soccer of La Florida, a larger space, says the municipal government.

In order to avoid traffic and parking problems, the authorities advise going to La Florida by bus. To this end, Titsa reinforces the service of lines 345 and 373 on Saturday.

Preparations begin on Friday in the parish halls, with the involvement of groups and residents of the neighborhood. To prepare the stew, 70 large stainless steel cauldrons are used, weighing more than 125 kilos. The ingredients exceed 4,000 kilos and are those of the traditional recipe, but in larger quantities.

Ingredients

Among other things, they will use more than 600 cabbages, 75 kilos of pineapples, 700 of potatoes and 60 of sweet potatoes, more than 1,300 kilos of pumpkin, more than 1,000 kilos of chayotas, 90 of chickpeas, 70 of beans and the same amount of carrots, almost 1,000 kilos of bacon and ribs, 60 kilos of leeks, 25 of garlic, 100 of onion, 45 of parsley, 75 of bubangos and 250 kilos of gofio. These are local products planted by the neighbors themselves.

Cooking the La Florida stew will be done over low heat for a minimum of two hours.using dry broom obtained from the National Park of the Teide and late. The day will feature entertainment from the groups Tres Quintos and El Golpito.

On Saturday morning, the Livestock Fair will also be held, which reaches its 52nd edition and includes the transfer, in procession, of the images of San Antonio Abad and the Virgin of Hope, to proceed with the blessing of the livestock after the celebration. of the mass on the premises.

The festival program of this Orotava town includes, as the final act, the celebration of the pilgrimage, which is in its 41st edition. At its end and as a finishing touch, a popular festival will take place in the Plaza del La Florida, which will be led by the Kimbara group.

The La Orotava City Council highlights “the exemplary involvement of the residents and groups of the neighborhood, both in the festival events and in many other projects that contribute to recovering customs, traditions and local heritage.”
