The Cabildo of Tenerife analyzes the extension of the tram to Los Rodeos and Tacoronte

He Tenerife Council is analyzing the tram expansion to the airport Tenerife North-City of La Laguna and even to Tacoronte. This was stated this Tuesday by the Minister of Mobility, Eulalia García, during the MOV Forum Canary Islands-Sustainable Mobility and Connectivity. García expressed that work is being done first on the extension between Tíncer and Muñeco de Nieve because it was the most advanced project.

The counselor intervened in an interview format, in which the editor of THE DAY-THE OPINION OF TENERIFE Moisés Álvarez Montero raised current issues, some of them proposed by the public. “We have always insisted that this involves a change in habits,” said Eulalia García. when asked about the complex terrain of social involvement and modifications in transportation. “Mobility has become everyone’s problem,” highlighted the nationalist.

As will be remembered, the extension of the tram to the most popularly known as Los Rodeos airport is an action that has generated opposition in recent years in La Laguna, among other reasons due to the expropriations it would entail, the fear of negative effects on some streets commercial losses or damages to the taxi sector. That is why the Lagunero mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez (PSOE), has stated that, if it occurs, the extension would have to be carried out once the Northern Highway has been buried and along the boulevard that would remain on the surface.

Regarding the bus-HOV lanes to the North and South, García said that it is a “very key measure.” When questioned about the taxi issue at Tenerife South Airport, she admitted the problem: “It’s not right. “I can’t say otherwise.” And she added in that regard: “We hope to unclog this.”

Eulalia García also recognized this Tuesday that there is a mismatch between the bus service and the high demand that currently exists. “We have insufficient fleet and drivers,” said the nationalist politician about an issue that is already being worked on, both with the acquisition of new vehicles and with the upcoming incorporation of drivers.

García maintained that the Tenerife Sustainable Mobility Plan “is a magnificent diagnosis”, and indicated about it and the data it collects that the most surprising thing to him is the distance of the trips and that more than 75% occur in a space of less than ten kilometers. “It gives us clues about where we can act,” he said. He also addressed the difficulty posed by geographical circumstances. “We all want transportation to pass in front of our house,” he said, before emphasizing that, given the island’s orography, that is impossible. Yes, initiatives can be developed, she affirmed, to transport people by taxi from the middle areas to the “main runners» or the construction of «deterrent parks» in strategic places to leave the car there and take public transport.

In response to the deadlines for the Padre Anchieta pedestrian walkway, he commented that the forecast is that it will be ready at the end of 2024 or at the beginning of 2025. “We have not ruled out anything,” he said in relation to the North and South trains. He also expressed confidence that future political changes will not block projects that can now be advanced. «You have to have breadth of vision; If not, we always return to point zero. “This is how we are delayed,” he lamented.
