The municipality of Los Realejos will once again fulfill its traditional vow to San Vicente Mártir this Monday, January 22, the date of his name day and festive day in the town, an annual promise of the royal people to whom he is their co-patron, a symbolic gesture that dates back to the year 1609 for the end of the epidemic known as the ‘Landres Plague’.
This tradition is considered one of the oldest in Tenerife, celebrating in 2024 the 415 years since the municipal councilors with the then parish priest of Nuestra Señora de La Concepción of the time made the solemn promise to come every year to celebrate the anniversary of Saint Vincent in thanksgiving for having freed them from the dreaded disease.
Thus, the departments of Festivities and Protocol, together with parish communities of Realejo Bajo, led by the new parish priest Jorge Concepción, and the San Vicente 2024 festivities commission, have coordinated this event that will begin at 10:30 with the usual civic-religious procession prior transfer of the banner of the Historical Village of Los Realejos from the Main Parish of Nuestra Señora de La Concepción to the Plaza de San Vicente, where upon arrival the religious ceremony will be held outside, next to its hermitage, around at approximately 11:15 a.m., which will be presided over by the Nivarian bishop, Bernardo Álvarez.
The municipal Corporation will be present, headed by the mayor, Adolfo González, who during the religious celebration will take the floor to remember the annual vote of the royal people to San Vicente Mártir, in addition to the parish clergy, the Venerable Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament, the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, insular and regional authorities, a military representation, and another of neighbors, accompanied by the Los Realejos Philharmonic Musical Society.
Procession after the Eucharist
The religious ceremony will feature the San Andrés and Santa Mónica choir in the musical section. At the end of the Eucharist, there will be a procession through the streets surrounding the hermitage, again accompanied by the centenary Philharmonic Musical Society of Los Realejos, Gold Medal of Tenerife.
The Eucharistic celebration will be broadcast live on both the Facebook pages of the Los Realejos City Council as well as those of the Festivities Department.
