SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, January 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Deputy of the Common, Rafael Yanes, has met with members of the educational community of CEO Bethencourt y Molina, of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who have requested specific resources to address the psychological needs of the students given that the mental health situation is a “social emergency.”

The director of the center, María José Zamorín, explains that the increase in minors suffering from mental health problems after the pandemic is “alarming, with Primary classes in which all students suffer from psychological problems.”

It also warns of the increasing number of minors who self-harm or engage in suicidal behavior.

Teachers ask for help in the face of what they consider a “social emergency” because they feel overwhelmed.

“We need a reference multidisciplinary team with whom we can work in these cases,” says Zamorín in a note sent by the Provincial Council.

In this sense, he regrets that the health system is saturated: “A student who wants to commit suicide is being given an appointment at Mental Health in six months.”

For this reason, it considers that educational centers must have the necessary means and personnel to deal with this problem.

The Common Representative, Rafael Yanes, considers that this reality that is experienced in educational centers is not sufficiently known by society, which is why collective reflection is necessary.

For this reason, he will request a meeting with the Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, and the president of the Canary Islands School Council to address this situation and suggest solutions that must be “immediate” due to the seriousness of the situation.
