The fire at the Arona composting plant is lessening, but it continues to generate a lot of smoke

The fire that has affected about 3.5 hectares of a composting plant in Arona, in the south of Tenerife, since last Thursday, is getting smaller and smaller and there are practically no flames, but there is a lot of smoke that has approached the homes due to the wind, fire department sources informed EFE this Saturday.

The fire that affects the compound of the composting plant located in Parque La Reina has spread through more than 100,000 tons of plant material, so the smoke generated has no toxic characteristics.

However, sources have indicated that since last night and throughout this morning calls have been received from neighbors in nearby areas complaining about the presence of smoke, which was due to the intense wind that blew in a southerly direction and then turned south. north, affecting Buzanada, the neighborhood located just above the area affected by the fire.

There it stagnated and formed a kind of plug that did not dissipate, but as the hours passed the situation has changed and the smoke is “more vertical” and the area is cleaner, the sources have added.

In any case, the area affected by the fire will continue to smoke a lot for a few days.

The fire is stable after a “very spectacular” start, but it was managed to be contained within the property and since it was contained within the perimeter, the risk of the flames spreading to the outside was avoided, the sources added.

Throughout this day, a team of 18 professional and volunteer firefighters is working in the area, an “important” crew to achieve the objective of dividing the fire into sectors to eliminate it.

Yesterday, a helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) of the Government of the Canary Islands joined the device, which carried out 63 water discharges in the area, according to information provided by the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center 112.
