The president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, announced this Wednesday that the corporation will set the renewal of transportation vouchers for buses and trams after three months in order to give more “flexibility” to users and at the same time has guaranteed that free services will be maintained even if the central government fails to pass its decree of ‘anti-crisis’ measures in Congress.
In a press conference to report on the agreements of the Government Council, he pointed out that the measure will be more or less similar in Gran Canaria given that both councils share the same problems and go “hand in hand” once the regional Executive has given freedom to island corporations to decide the criteria.
Dávila has specified that she is not in favor of total free service without limitations and is in favor of maintaining cancellations – there would be 30 in three months – so as not to harm the quality of the service for regular users beyond the fact that it could be a “relief” for the citizens’ pockets.
The president has indicated that the cost of transport, due to the large increase in the number of travelers – around 40% – is not covered by the 81 million budgeted by the central government and in the specific case of Tenerife there is a deficit of 20 million, already covered with own funds last year.
By 2024, and if the state decree is not approved, the Council would use its own remaining treasury.
Dávila has also pointed out that work will be done so that the Canary Resident Bonus discount also serves for students from other islands who study in Tenerife.
