Reported for causing damage to a protected cave with archaeological remains in Tenerife



The Civil Guard has identified and proposed for administrative sanction a person who allegedly caused “serious damage” inside a cave that is part of the Protected Natural Space Environmental Reserve of San Blas, in San Miguel de Abona, in the south from Tenerife.

This person, of British nationality and who spent the night in the cave, is accused of damaging one of the walls by lighting a fire inside, and of carrying out small excavations in areas where archaeological sites in the protected space were located, sources from the armed institute detail.

Those responsible for the San Blas hotel complex notified the Civil Guard that, in one of the protected caves of the aforementioned natural space, there was a person who was spending the night there and who had caused “serious damage” to the historical heritage.

Agents from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) carried out an inspection of the place and verified the damage allegedly caused by this man, who was evicted from the cave and filed three reports for administrative violations of three laws.

One is the Waste and Contaminated Soils for a Circular Economy law, which contemplates fines ranging between 2,000 and 3.5 million euros; another, the Historical Heritage of the Canary Islands, with expected fines of 600 to 600,000 euros; and the third, of the Soil and Protected Natural Areas of the Canary Islands, with fines of 60 to 600,000 euros.
