The cities of Spain with more than 50,000 inhabitantss work for the implementation of the Low Emission Zones (ZBE) and the vehicle circulation restrictions that they will entail, in order to reduce pollution. In it case of La Lagunathe City Council has created an interdepartmental commission that brings together technicians and councilors with responsibility in areas related to ZBE, which They will initially be delimited in the historic center and the surroundings of San Honorato.

Specifically, the Municipal Corporation explained that work is being done to delimit these ZBEs in the coming days through a municipal side that makes this procedure official.

From that moment on, as indicated by these municipal sources, work will be done on a modification of the municipal mobility ordinance to integrate these areas into the existing regulations, and thus shorten deadlines. As for when the City Council plans to launch these areas and their restrictions, they did not specify estimates, but rather it would be as soon as possible.

The objective is to delimit the Low Emission Zones in the historic center and the surroundings of San Honorato, explained the aforementioned sources. And, based on these experiences, we will consider extending this model to other parts of the municipality, always taking into account the evaluations and impressions of the technicians and the affected citizens. In the proposal that was being worked on in the previous mandate, the La Villa road area was also included. In this regard, the local Corporation indicated that this work carried out has been taken advantage of but with some adaptations, among others, including the La Villa road is ruled out for now due to its proximity to the highway.

Regarding how the control of vehicle access to the Low Emission Zones will be carried out, they pointed out that other alternatives to the use of the DGT environmental labels are being considered, but that it has not yet been definitively decided.

It is worth remembering that this badge can be obtained at Post Offices and determines the level of environmental impact of the vehicle, from the most efficient, such as electric, to the most polluting. In many cities they are being used to determine which vehicles can circulate in the ZBE and which cannot, based on the labels they have.

Advantage

Likewise, the aforementioned municipal sources highlighted that La Laguna has an advantage over other municipalities that are at the same processing point, since its downtown area already covers a large area of square meters and pedestrianized roads closed to traffic, which which brings the priority objective of Low Emission Zones quite close.

In addition, there are also a series of previous reports relating to the emissions of the last year in different parts of La Laguna and other documents corresponding to the number of residents who could be affected, loading and unloading vehicles that access the city, etc. This documentation is essential for decision making, they pointed out.

As they highlighted, the objective of the La Laguna City Council is to advance in reducing emissions as soon as possible, but always hand in hand with the business sector and the affected citizens.
