The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esther Monzón, and the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, visited the Hospital del Sur today, Thursday, to learn about the new actions recently implemented in said center that affect both the care of Emergencies as well as the portfolio of surgical services and diagnostic tests.
The director of the Canarian Health Service (SCS), Carlos Díaz, also attended the visit; the manager of the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital Complex, Roberto Gómez; and the representatives of the Pro Hospital del Sur Platform.
During the visit, the counselor explained that a series of measures have been taken to make the Hospital del Sur, a center dependent on the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital, more decisive. To this end, the two operating rooms that were inoperative have already been put into operation, so that the surgical area currently has four functioning operating rooms, and laboratory activity and diagnostic tests have been reinforced that allow the Emergency Service to operate as needed. 24 hours a day in a more decisive way.
In this sense, it has been key to renew the equipment of the Laboratory service, so that it can provide a continuous service and at any time of the day, and the staff of both Laboratory and Radiology has been reinforced with six more personnel to increase activity. and the operating hours of both services.
After the visit, the Health Minister assured that the increase in healthcare tests in this hospital will allow the population to avoid traveling to the metropolitan area and will improve care, since more complete and higher quality studies can be carried out, reducing the time for carrying them out and increasing the number of tests to be carried out in the southern area of the island.
For her part, the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, thanked the Government of the Canary Islands for the effort made to comply with the commitments to improve healthcare with the island, especially with the southern area.
Furthermore, the spokesperson for the Pro Hospital del Sur Platform, Jordi Esplugas, assured that throughout the almost 29 years of the Platform’s claim, they have rarely seen so much progress made in just four months.
The Radiology service also has improvements in the health center. A new spectral CT scan has been acquired that allows more precise studies due to its high technology. Likewise, remote control radiological equipment has been incorporated that allows conventional x-ray studies and digestive studies. In addition, the Magnetic Resonance software has been updated, now offering greater diagnostic capacity, and one of the conventional radiology equipment at the health center has been renewed.
ACTIVITY
During 2023, the hospital center’s professionals have attended a total of 122,039 consultations and have performed 3,227 surgical interventions and 80,502 radiological tests. Until November of this year, 61,155 emergencies have been attended to, 50,705 adults and 10,450 pediatrics.
The improvements to the Hospital del Sur have been achieved with INVEAT funds, REACT funds and funds from the Canary Islands Health Service. In this way, more than two million euros have been invested in updating and renewing the equipment, among which is the TAC update for 498,520 euros.
The Hospital del Sur has outpatient clinics for fourteen medical and surgical specialties in the services of Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Dermatology, Digestive System, Endocrinology, Nutrition and Diabetes Education, Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy, General and Digestive Surgery, Traumatology and Orthopedics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Urology, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, as well as Mental Health with an area of child, adolescent and adult psychiatry.
In addition, it performs functional tests for diagnosis and monitoring of pathologies in the population of the south of Tenerife; It has a Multipurpose Day Hospital; adult and pediatric emergency service; a radiology area with CT, laboratory and nuclear magnetic resonance. It also has major outpatient surgery, laboratory, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy and hospitalization for patients who require hospital admission.
