The La Laguna City Council will launch a project in 2024 to improve municipal management in the event of possible impacts or emergency situations caused by natural events. La Laguna, Naturally Safe is the name of this initiative that arises from the agreement between the City Council and the Canary Islands Volcanoes Association.
The mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the president of the Canary Islands Volcanoes Association, Víctor Melo López, signed the agreement this Tuesday for the implementation of a project that “seeks to provide citizens with the information and appropriate tools to act in the event that any type of natural phenomenon occurs, to which our islands are no strangers,” indicated Luis Yeray Gutiérrez.
For his part, Víctor Melo thanked the mayor for the trust placed by the City Council in the association’s proposal. “This agreement also recognizes the extensive altruistic work that our volunteers have been carrying out in this municipality. For 20 years we have promoted numerous informative actions to understand the volcanic phenomenon and other natural risks. With this project, which we believe is pioneering in Spain, we will be able to reach more people and more efficiently,” he explained.
La Laguna, Naturally Safe It is articulated around three axes. The first of them is the advice to the La Laguna City Council and the areas with responsibility for emergency management on natural hazards that may affect the municipality, as well as the associated risks.
A second axis consists of training the population residing in the municipality about natural phenomena through the creation of an open and permanent training classroom. And a third point is the design and implementation of informative campaigns for the population to improve self-protection against natural dangers that may affect the municipality.
Volcanoes of the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands Volcanoes Association was born in 2011 and is a national citizen association, registered with the Ministry of the Interior of the Government of Spain. It is based in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and is a non-profit citizen group that has been working since 2004 to improve the volcanic culture of the Canary Islands.
Its volunteers work completely altruistically to inform and train in a clear but rigorous way about volcanic activity in the Canary Islands and the rest of the world. In addition, its work also includes the dissemination of information and advice to face other natural phenomena that affect our islands.
