SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, December 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands have gained 24,347 inhabitants this year compared to 2022, reaching a total population of 2,202,048 inhabitants, 1.1% more, according to the ‘Official population figures of Spanish municipalities’ corresponding to the review of the Municipal Register 2023, published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics.

Data from the INE indicate that only one of the ten most populated municipalities in the Canary Islands have lost population. This is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which has 378,027 inhabitants, 770 less than in 2022, -0.2%.

In relative terms, the municipalities that have gained the most inhabitants among those with the largest population are Granadilla de Abona, with an increase of 4.75%, corresponding to 2,495 more inhabitants, bringing the total to 54,942; and Arona, which has gained 2,267 residents (+2.73%), up to 85,249 inhabitants.

Only one of the two large population centers in the Canary Islands closed the year positively. Thus, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has registered a growth of 707 more inhabitants (+0.33%) and reaches 209,395 inhabitants. You have to go back to 2010 (222,643) and 2011 (222,271) to find a higher figure, which decreased until 2017 (203,692).

The growth recorded in San Cristóbal de La Laguna also stands out, with 1,219 more inhabitants, going from 157,815 in 2022 to 159,034 in 2023 (+0.77%), and Santa Lucía de Tirajana, whose population increased by 1.49%. , reaching 75,677 inhabitants, which is 1,117 more people than the previous year.
