The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, announced this project last February, with which the municipality will recover part of the old wetland that gives it its name with the creation of this floodable park, which will be a new sustainable leisure space in the city. , at the same time it will restore an ecosystem that marked the town and, in addition, a hydraulic infrastructure that will prevent possible flooding in the area, where historically there have been problems of this type.
That same month, the Minister of Ecological Transition of the Canary Islands Government at that time, José Antonio Valbuena, and the mayor of La Laguna signed the inter-administrative action protocol for the execution of said park.
In a recent interview with DIARIO DE AVISOS, the local councilor explained that in recent days meetings had taken place between the technicians of the Ecological Transition Department and the City Council itself, and that the next step would be to take the matter to the Local Government Board. entrusts Gestur to draft the project, which was approved in yesterday’s session for a budget of 328,516 euros and a period of 12 months.
The preparation of this project, according to the file, will entail reports and studies such as the design of the urban and storm drainage system of the park, hydraulic project, urbanization, architecture of the park, the visitor center and others such as a design of the wetland , a botanical report, avifauna and environmental impact assessment, among others.
Likewise, the purpose of the assignment to Gestur is to carry out technical work, an essential requirement for the Western Territorial Planning technical service of the Department of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands to approve this action as a project of regional interest, states the document.
Characteristics
The project is proposed on a free plot of about 30,000 square meters located in the area of the original wetland, between Silverio Alonso, Tabares Bartlet, José Peraza de Ayala streets and San Diego Avenue. This is an initiative with which “we recover our history, our natural heritage and the essence of why our municipality exists,” the mayor highlighted last February, who explained that he had been working since 2019 to make this project a reality. An action that, in addition, “will solve any type of flooding problem that we may have in the coming years.”
As presented in February, a large lagoon will be created on the plot to the north and a smaller one to the south. In the space between the two there will be a place to stay that will have a bird watching point and that will also act as a limit towards the reserve area. The enclosure will have points of use and recreation, expanding the spaces of the non-flood area, creating routes between them.
