The Plenary Hall of the City Council of La Orotava this morning hosted the first technical meeting of the ASTERISCO Network, of social and institutional agents for LGBTI diversity. It is a space for coordination on local diversity policies promoted by the LGBTI Diversas Association and which was established in June.

The meeting was attended by technical personnel from the municipalities of Buenavista, Los Silos, Garachico, Icod de los Vinos, Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Santa Úrsula, La Victoria, La Matanza and El Sauzal. For their part, the municipalities of Tegueste and La Laguna attended as guests, as they plan to join the network soon. The consistories of El Tanque and San Juan de la Rambla excused their attendance and will continue working on the network.

The Mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, assures that this first meeting will be the first of many others that will allow firm steps towards achieving something that should be normal: respect, respect for sexual and gender diversity, advocating for a society more open and tolerant. These meetings are essential and will help us, all the local administrations that are part of the network, to take the appropriate and necessary measures in this matter. For this reason, he appreciates the work of all those who are part of the project and the members of the Diversas Association.

The President of Diversas, Sergio Siverio, indicated that “the ASTERISCO Network constitutes a coordinated institutional work space in diversity policies, in which we join the efforts of those municipalities committed to LGBTI rights *”. In addition, he recalled that the network has the support of the participation and diversity area of the Cabildo de Tenerife.

Siverio announced that “the topics addressed in this first technical meeting consisted of a first joint contact, in which we have tried to make a preliminary diagnosis of the main needs of the municipalities adhered to the network, in order to promote actions in the next few months”. Before the end of the year, the first political meeting is also scheduled to be held, with political representatives from all the attached municipalities.
