Buenavista families affected by an eviction ask the Government to buy their homes

The families who will be evicted on January 26 from the Roycasa building, in Las Canteras (Buenavista del Norte), ask the Government of the Canary Islands to acquire “immediately and urgently” the officially protected property of public promotion in which they reside and guarantee their permanence in the apartments they live in. The eviction order is promoted by Kelona Invest SL, which acquired the building in 2022, after the bankruptcy of the development company.

In use since 2011, Five families currently live in the building with a valid contract and pay a rent of 300 euros.. Each floor has been self-sufficient in energy with a motor since the electricity company cut off the supply last August. They do have drinking water service.

Most of the dozen families that resided in this property are relocated, many of them in other municipalities. (Los Realejos and San Juan de la Rambla, especially). The Vientos de Daute collective criticizes this circumstance because it causes those affected to “abandon their care network and their family network”, an uprooting that is resolved with the purchase of the building, says Alexander Velázquez, spokesperson for the group.

Vientos de Daute points out that those relocated suffer the abandonment of their care network and their family network, a great uprooting

This Friday they gathered in front of the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government and they sent the request to its president, Fernando Clavijo, and to the regional Housing Councilor, Pablo Rodríguez.

Among those who are no longer in the building there are families (those who have been living in the place the longest) who have a rental contract – some have already paid more than 30,000 euros for this concept – with the right to purchase.

Vientos de Daute demands that Buenavista del Norte be included among the preferred municipalities when indicating the areas in which the construction of social housing developments should be carried out.
