The Santa Cruz City Council has announced that it will limit the establishment of scooter rental companies in the capital by bidding for the service through a public tender. This was announced this morning by the Councilor for Security and Mobility, Evelyn Alonso, and confirmed by the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, who also explained that the concession to operate in the city will be given to a single company. The mayor acknowledged the inconvenience that this type of vehicle is causing in the city, both due to the lack of awareness of its users, and due to the inaction of the companies themselves when it comes to controlling where the scooters are left.
“There is a legal vacuum that prevents us from direct control of these companies, since they work like any car rental business,” said Bermúdez. Despite this, “we are going to regulate the sector, first through the mobility ordinance, which will establish the uses of this vehicle, and then with the granting of a license, which will establish the bases for the company to is the winner of the contest, provide the service in the city ”.
While this comes, the mayor assured that “we will follow the sanction route, imposing fines and removing the skateboards when they are parked in areas that are not authorized for it.” And he launched a message addressed to the companies that currently operate in the city, and there are already four, “those that are taking advantage of the legal vacuum to act badly, let them know that they have little time left to enjoy this situation.”
