TENERIFE PHOTOGRAPHY |  The ‘Viperine Tongue’ wins the Botanical photography contest

The ‘Viperine tongue’ by the photographer José Álvarez Hernández has won the seventh edition of the Sign up for the JAO Photography Contest. The colorful work has managed to capture the rich biodiversity of the La Orotava Acclimation Garden – better known as Botanical Garden of Puerto de la Cruz– objective of this unique contest that seeks to promote and disseminate the natural and cultural heritage of the center.

In addition to this work, the jury has also awarded two of the contest participants in the runner-up category. Specific, ‘Hola caracola’, by María Ruiz, and ‘En picado’, by Adrián Martín, received this honorable mention. This event has managed, in the eyes of the mayor of Porto, Marco Gonzáez, to “highlight the uniqueness of this space by fusing culture with the visitor’s experience”, who announced that the ten finalist images of the ceramen will be revealed in an outdoor exhibition. They will do it, as he explained “in such an emblematic place in the city as the Punta del Viento Viewpoint, on Paseo de San Telmo.”

The initiative is organized by the Canary Islands Institute of Agricultural Research (ICIA) and has the collaboration of Binter and the City Councils of Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava, which according to Gonzalez It is an example of the “twinning” between both consistories.

The act of reading the jury’s decision, which was attended by the Agriculture advisor Narvay Quintero, who took advantage of the meeting to highlight “the richness of the enclosure, which houses more than 1,000 species and constitutes a unique space in Europe thanks, among other things, to the unique climate of the Islands, which makes possible the conservation of valuable tropical and suptropical collections. The Minister of Agriculture also highlighted the “great scientific work for the conservation of native plant genetic resources carried out by the ICIA, and which represents the least visible part of this exhibition area.”

The first prize includes a round-trip ticket for two people to one of Binter’s international destinations departing from Canary Islandsand the two runners-up will enjoy a round-trip ticket for two people to one of this company’s national destinations, also departing from the Canary Islands.

Last week, the jury’s decision was made public, attended by authorities such as the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González, and the Minister of Agriculture, Narvay Quintero.
