Common front of southern mayors to counter the economic crisis

«We, the mayors of the South, have long wanted to resume the meetings we had in the past; there are many issues that concern the citizens of the South, “said González at the end of the meeting, held in the plenary hall of the San Miguel City Council. “We are concerned about the post-covid situation, housing, social issues, training and employment, mainly,” he listed in statements to the media, before highlighting the regional importance: “The South is the economic engine of Tenerife and Canary Islands, and we think we have a lot to say.

To analyze the current economic situation and other problems on the southern slope of the island, the local councilors have created work commissions in which different sectors such as unions or oenegés will have a place, “to try to create a postcovid joint program and try to find a solution to the problems that are going to arise from now on, also taking into account that the damned Palmero volcano is there and we can suffer its consequences ».

The mayor of San Miguel stopped in coordination with administrations such as the Tenerife Council and the Canary Islands Government. «You also have to take into account that times have changed and you have to make decisions especially on issues of ecology, environment, energy, water … It is the future. We must bear in mind the European funds that are to come, to see if we can agree on joint projects of all the municipalities, “he said.

Quarterly meetings

The forecast is that the meetings will be held quarterly to make monitoring of progress, demands and involvement of social sectors. “One more element should be introduced: we have analyzed a document that the CEST is working on,” added the head of the Adeje City Council on a text from the Círculo de Empresarios del Sur de Tenerife. “We appreciate that work and we want it to be part of our debate, which, ultimately, is the debate about the Island and the Canary Islands and the well-being of our people,” he said.

Fraga touched on the need for the “permeability” of the rural world with the tourism sector. «The basic activity is tourism; There is no alternative at the moment and, therefore, we have to manage to put these two sectors together very well so that one establishes synergies with the other, “he said. “We are going to continue listening to our society and working to consolidate that discourse of the South, which is not one of confrontation or exclusion, but rather the discourse of the Island. We are from Tenerife, we love Tenerife and we want to work for our region” , defended.
