Most used baby names in the Canary Islands in recent years

In Canary Islandsthe choice of names for babies follows a marked trend, and according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE)this preference has remained constant in recent years. Mateo and Valeria stand out as the most chosen names for boys and girls born in the region during 2022.

At the national level, The most popular names were Martín and Lucía, followed by Mateo, Hugo and Leo for boys, and Sofía, Martina and Valeria for girls.

Although there is a considerable diversity of names, the most repeated represent a small percentage of the total births. The Martíns make up only 1.9% of boys born in 2022, while the Lucías represent only 2.2% of girls in Spain last year.

In other regions

In different regions, the preference for specific names is evident. Martín predominated in several communities in the north of the peninsula such as Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Galicia and the Basque Country. Mateo maintained his popularity in the Canary Islands, the Valencian Community, Madrid, Navarra and La Rioja. Hugo was the favorite in Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia, and Manuel had a resurgence, being the most chosen in Andalusia and Extremadura.

In Catalonia, Leo headed the list for children, followed by Nil, Marc, Pol, Jan and Biel, while in the Balearic Islands Marc had preference over Pau, Lucas, Hugo and Alex.

In Ceuta and Melillathe elections were different: Mohamed for boys and Mariam and Sara for girlsrespectively.
