The Mírame Televisión Solidarity Telemarathon returns to Santa Cruz

The Mírame Televisión Solidarity Telemarathon returns, faithful to its event every Christmas, to once again request the generosity and participation of the Canary Islands. The initiative will be held on December 21, and for the first time in the thirteen editions that are taking place this year – it was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic – simultaneously on the two capital islands, specifically in the city of Gáldar and in Santa Cruz de Tenerifewith collection points throughout the Archipelago

The initiative of the Food Banks of Canary IslandsMírame TV and Televisión Española propose to mobilize the society of the islands to help more than 40,000 people in severe poverty through 228 entities and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

The Telemarathon, which was born during the 2008 crisis in response to the extreme situation that the Canarians were experiencing, has been appealing to the generosity of the islanders for more than twelve years to help the most vulnerable because chronic poverty remains on the islands.

Poverty, in figures

The data is stubborn and speaks for itself. 36 percent of the population, that is, 780,000 people, of which almost 377,000 are children and adolescents, are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, according to the report of the European Network to Fight Poverty and Exclusion Social.

Besides, The Canary Islands have an average income of 10,116 euros per year, the lowest in the entire Stateand it is the autonomous community in which the shopping basket has become most expensive in the last year, with an increase of 12%.

The figures are overwhelming and eloquent regarding the need and urgency to exercise solidarity. As on previous occasions, the largest action in this area in the Canary Islands requests the donation of non-perishable food, basic baby products, clothing, footwear, new toys, personal hygiene items and help for animal shelters.

Collection points

The organization of the Solidarity Telemarathon will enable authorized collection points to make it easier for citizens to contribute their donations. The Web www.mirametv.com, the group’s social networks and the network’s special programming will update the list of said authorized points every day. Mírame TV makes available to all groups, companies and entities that want to become collection points the telephone number 691 62 57 97 and the email [email protected] as a way to join the initiative.

In these twelve years, more than 70,000 people have participated in the parades, parades, concerts and donations of the Solidarity Telemarathon, which has featured more than 190 hours of live broadcast.

Manuel Artiles keeps his enthusiasm intact, and as he did from the first day, he invites you to “share the announcement launched by the Canary Islands food banks to celebrate the Telemarathon.” He values the director as “the largest solidarity action in the Canary Islands” with “the challenge of helping 40,000 people in severe poverty. 9,000 families and more than 4,000 babies and children. Asked about the venue for the 2023 Telemarathon, Artiles plays with the mystery: «In principle It will not be in Mercatenerife like last year and there will be a surprise».

The success of collective will

Challenge achieved. The Mírame TV Solidarity Telemarathon, with the support of RTVE in the Canary Islands, collected 40 tons of non-perishable food, toys and other products destined for the Tenerife institution on December 21, 2022, at the headquarters of the Mercatenerife Food Bank. and its counterpart from Gran Canaria. They were distributed among 40,000 vulnerable people, of them 4,000 children belonging to families in situations of severe poverty. The objective is to reach similar figures this year to cover the basic needs of the beneficiaries for three months. Hundreds of volunteers and collaborators went out of their way for eight intense hours to receive donations from public organizations, entities, companies and individuals. The collection was successfully recovered after two years. | JDM
