The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the United States ambassador to Spain, Julissa Reynoso, agreed this Wednesday on the need to relaunch the level of dialogue between the archipelago and the North American country in the search for joint projects.
During the meeting held at the Presidency headquarters of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, both identified business opportunities and institutional collaboration in areas such as research, green energy, education, the fight against climate change or the digital economy.
Fernando Clavijo has also taken advantage of the meeting with the highest representative of the United States in Spain to inform her of the advantages that the archipelago offers as a business logistics platform in Africa.
In this sense, the president recalled that, together with its strategic geographical position and local experience in doing business with West African countries, the Canary Islands have an Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) with “unique incentives” for interested US companies. use the main mid-Atlantic hub.
Regarding collaboration projects, the president of the Canary Islands has explained to the North American ambassador “the enormous opportunities” that exist in fields associated with climate change and global warming, highlighting the scientific-technological capabilities of the Canary Islands in the blue and green economy. . As an example, Clavijo has proposed to Reynosa to open threads of scientific collaboration between academic entities from the United States and the Faculty of Marine Sciences of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and PLOCAN.
RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE
The regional government is also committed to promoting relations with the United States in the astrophysics sector, through joint projects in the field of large telescopes and space knowledge where the University of La Laguna and the Canary Islands Astrophysical Institute work. It also detects possibilities for collaboration in research linked to the prevention of sixth-generation forest fires such as those suffered this summer in Tenerife and Hawaii.
The meeting between Clavijo and Reynoso is part of the objective set by the Government of the Canary Islands of diversifying the Canary Islands economy by betting on an increase in public-private collaboration, especially in the field of knowledge and research.
The visit to the Canary Islands of the first female ambassador of the United States in Spain continues tomorrow in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with her attendance, among other events, at a dinner with representatives of Proexca and private companies related to economic areas where there is greater scope collaboration between the archipelago and the United States.
