The City Council transfers land to the Government for 90 public houses

The Arona City Council has transferred land to the Government of the Canary Islands for the construction of up to 90 public housing units. This was confirmed by municipal sources after an agreement adopted on October 10 and on which the number of houses is now expanded. Specifically, the Canarian Housing Institute (Icavi) has confirmed to the Aronero Town Council that the conditions are being met for the social rental housing foreseen in the Estrella Marazul Partial Plan are completed this mandate. Initially, 45 homes were planned, then 60 and now 90. The increase in properties occurs by reducing parking. In more detail, the forecast is to shortly put out to tender an action worth 5.3 million euros.

The project is part of a collaboration agreement between the Arona City Council and the Canary Islands Housing Institute, and has been included in the aid program for the construction of rental housing in energy-efficient buildings. It has a budget of 5.3 million euroswill be executed through a cooperation system and will be located on a plot of 5,103 square meters donated by the Aronero Town Council.

The mayor of Arona, Fatima Lemes, emphasizes that the putting into use of social housing is a priority for both her and the government team, “since the quality of life of many families in the municipality and their minor daughters and sons depends on that resource.” He recalls that in this municipality “housing prices have skyrocketed, so there is a high percentage of the population that cannot afford access to a decent roof or does so by sacrificing other essential expenses.”

«It is essential that we work to improve the housing situation now. For this reason, we must not only get to work at the municipal level, but also have strong support at the regional and state level so that this problem does not have repercussions as it is doing at the social level, since the population figures that are totally unprotected are worrying. , highlighted Fátima Lemes.

The mayor of Arona considers that “municipalities that mobilize so much employment and as much activity as Arona needs to respond to the demand for housing that we should already have available to citizens. Therefore, it is a priority issue for us and we are happy that we can get good news like that of Estrella Marazul in the short term.

For his part, the Housing Councilor, Sebastián Roque, explained that, during the meeting he recently held with the director of Icavi, the regional manager reported that the drafting of this project is about to go out to tender and that it will be during that process “when it is assessed whether it is technically and legally viable” the increase.

Support for increase

In the event that the viability of the proposal is confirmed, as Roque pointed out, Ortega’s commitment has been support the increase in housing raised by municipal technicians after verifying that the land area intended for parking exceeds the legal requirement for spaces. The councilor highlights Ortega’s willingness to respond to the impossibility of many Aronera families to access decent housing in the free rental and purchase market. In this municipality in which 110,000 people are registered, as Roque indicated, there is the added problem that the provision of social housing has been blocked since the last century, “so it is urgent to remedy this blockage and the Ortega’s statement that he wants to give priority to the project proposed in Arona.
