They report high work stress and twelve-hour days in migrant centers in Tenerife

The Union Workers Commissions (CCOO) has denounced this Thursday the “strong work stress” to which they say the staff in the Las Raíces and Canteras immigrant centers are subjectedin Tenerifewith “days of up to twelve hours” to attend to the increase in people arriving at the coasts Canary Islands.

In a statement, CCOO has asserted that The staff does not rule out mobilizations in case this situation continues. and has demanded more resources from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration to avoid the “limit situation” of staff and users.

The union organization has recalled that since the end of May The migratory routes to the Canary Islands have had a “brutal” increase in influx and that, in this situation, the workers of Las Raíces and Canteras “find themselves with a lack of structural resources and unaffordable disorganization, which generates an enormous work and psychological burden on the workforce.”

In this sense, they have pointed out the high frequency with which the staff is required to work overtime “due to the lack of staff and the inability to incorporate more people in case of emergencies and foresight”.

“It is impossible, even, to do something as basic as detecting the vulnerability of migrants, something that would allow them to request asylum,” added the union, which in any case has recognized that the managing entity of the centers, ACCEM, “has tried to comply commitments by making more hires.

“But these are insufficient actions for an emergency situation,” they have said, which is why they have pointed out that they are a problem also for the Ministrywhich in his opinion should guarantee sufficient resources.

Thus, CCOO has expressed that the staff’s position “has always been to reach agreements through dialogue”, but they have asserted that “they can no longer assume a situation that overwhelms them.”

“For this reason, if this situation continues, they will propose mobilizations to guarantee their rights,” they concluded.
