Cultural agenda of La Laguna: all the weekend plans, in detail

Quesada: the truth of silence’

DATE: November 2

PLACE: Leal Theater (Chamber Room)

TIME: 7:00 p.m.

Screening of a preview of the documentary by Iván López that addresses the death of the young university student Javier Fernández Quesada, murdered after being shot by the Civil Guard on the entrance steps of the University of La Laguna on December 12, 1977. The name de Quesada became over the years an authentic symbol of the period of Spanish transition in the Canary Islands, and more specifically in La Laguna. With this work Iván López tries to remedy a silence of almost half a century. The screening is accompanied by a subsequent cineforum with the participation of the director and the producer. Free admission.

Johnny Chico

DATE: November 3

PLACE: Leal Theater

TIME: 8:30 p.m.

The work of Australian author Stephen House comes to La Laguna with the help of actor Víctor Palmero. With a brave monologue, the protagonist will deal with the conflict of personal and sexual identity experienced by a marginal young man, who tries to survive in a big city, recently arrived from a town, escaping family violence and misunderstanding.

GrooveSession

DATE: November 3

PLACE: Convent of Santo Domingo

TIME: 8:30 p.m.

The Canarian saxophonist Kike Perdomo will bring Groove Sessions to the La Laguna public, a project that has been on different national stages, including the Café Central in Madrid. With his own repertoire of compositions, he will present a current and fresh sound, but without losing the essence of jazz, blues and the sound of New Orleans.

IX Achamán Festival

DATE: November 4

PLACE: Leal Theater

TIME: 8:30 p.m.

The Achamán group returns one more year with the Festival that bears its name, in the city where it was born and which has given it its Gold medal, San Cristóbal de La Laguna. On this occasion, they will have the participation of the group “Amigos del arte de Güímar”, which celebrates 80 years of existence, and with the presence of soloists of the stature of Víctor Batista and María José Martín. The proceeds from the festival will benefit Cáritas.

Monument. Nine Guanche incarnations

DATE: from September 9 to November 9

PLACE: Hermitage of San Miguel

TIME: Monday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The exhibition by La Laguna artist Yapci Ramos questions the forms of representation of the Guanche past and vindicates the presence of women in spaces. Taking inspiration from the nine menceyes in the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias in Candelaria, Ramos invites the Tenerife public to reflect on the active role they represented in pre-Hispanic society.

Memento mori. The meaning of death in the Canary Islands

DATE: from October 20 to November 25

PLACE: Old Convent of Santo Domingo.

HOURS: Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Exhibition curated by Benito Cabrera that tries to cover, in a didactic way, the different ways in which the Canarians have faced death throughout history. The artists compile points of view and traditions as diverse as music, popular lyrics, religion or gastronomy.
