Agents, last night, at one of the controls around the Quadrilateral. Fran Pallero

The new security and control device, agreed last Thursday between the administrations to end the bottles in the lagoon nightlife area known as the Quadrilateral, was launched from 8:00 p.m. yesterday, and involves, among other measures, a reinforcement this weekend of security in this area and its surroundings, with more than fifty agents between the National Police and the Local Police, a higher number than in previous.

Specifically, last night the reinforcement was 40 troops and tonight it is expected to exceed fifty, according to municipal sources.

The unblocking yesterday of the labor dispute between the City Council and the Local Police unions has helped this reinforcement and the Government Sub-delegation has also added more troops than other weekends.

This reinforcement was specified in the technical meeting that took place yesterday to coordinate the operation, and in which it was also confirmed that Metropolitano de Tenerife has increased security inside the trams, since it had been detected that many young people were taking the tram to La Lagoon with alcohol.

Public health risk area

A technical meeting that gave continuity to the meeting that took place last Thursday between different administrations and in which it was agreed that the Government of the Canary Islands would decree the Quadrilateral area and its surroundings as an area of risk for public health, as announced by the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez.
This decree facilitates the work of the Local and National Police when it comes to establishing access controls, security and requisitioning alcoholic beverages in this area, which began last night.

“We are going to limit access with a series of filters in the streets adjacent to the Quadrilateral. The idea is, in these access controls, to requisition the bottles of alcohol and sound equipment ”, explained the mayor on Thursday.

Likewise, this device also implies the closure of parks and recreation areas around the Quadrilateral to avoid large bottles.

The councilor also made an appeal, last Thursday, “to the parents of these young people that we have detected in our municipality, between 15 and 17 years old, who are in an advanced state of intoxication, and we need the collaboration of all” .

Neighborhood complaint

Neighbors and residents in the area have been reporting multiple complaints and their concern about the macro bottles of recent weekends. Thus, this same week, from the La Verdellada neighborhood association they reiterated their complaint about these bottles, which are produced “with more and more aggressiveness, lack of control and violence”, overflowing “towards all the neighboring neighborhoods”.

The Neighborhood Association of the Historic Center also recently met with around 25 presidents of communities of building owners around the Quadrilateral to address this situation.

In addition, a citizen initiative launched through the Change.org platform has collected more than 800 signatures to put an end to this problem.
