Clavijo announces a 9.2% increase in the budget allocation for the Canary Islands capitals

This was said this Saturday after the meeting of the Capital Council that was attended by the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Jose Manuel Bermudezand by videoconference of the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran CanariaCarolina Darias, to inform you about the preparation of the 2024 Autonomous Budget.

Clavijo pointed out that the increase in this item will allow The capital of Tenerife receives 3.71 million euros and Gran Canaria 4.23 million.

He also explained that both mayors have conveyed that the concentration of population in the two capitals requires a more in-depth debate on the needs of these municipalities, which is why he showed the Government’s willingness to sit down and debate the peculiarities of the capitals.

Regarding the 2024 budget, the president pointed out that they are talking about a budget of about 11.3 billion euros which each department must then break down, understanding that we must continue agreeing and listening to the suggestions of both employers and unions.

During the meeting, Clavijo pointed out that the accounting difference between both amounts is produced by the different parameters in the number of population and surface area of ​​the municipality that both capitals have.

The presentation of the financial lines for next year 2024 to the top officials of the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and The Palms of Gran Canaria It is carried out every year in compliance with article eight of the Statute of Shared Capitalism of the cities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which has been in force since April 2007.

In this area, the president has highlighted “the unquestionable commitment” of the Government of the Canary Islands with the financial capacity of the two capital city councils.

“As every year, and prior to the presentation of the General Budget bill of the Autonomous Community, we have shared with the mayors of the two capitals their needs for “have in both municipalities sufficient and necessary means to provide a series of public services in response to the demands of our citizens.”he indicated.

He has also highlighted the excellent level of dialogue that the Government he presides maintains with the first councilors of the two Canary Islands capitals and stressed that the Capital Council meeting has been quick and effective in its results because, stated the president, “when things are going well, it is more comfortable and easier to work and reach agreements, which in the end is what the society of our municipalities, of our eight islands, that is, of the entire archipelago, demands of us.”

Problems different from other municipalities

For his part, the mayor of Santa Cruz has shown his satisfaction with this increase, while conveying to the Government of the Canary Islands the need for some municipalities such as the capital of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, The Lagoon or Teldewhich comprise 40% of the Canary Islands population, are considered differently in the budgets.

“We understand that they have a different problem in social matters, in terms of housing, employment or poverty, which requires some different measures from the Government and also from the councils of Tenerife and Gran Canaria fundamentally,” he explained.
