The Red Cross has asked for volunteers from the Peninsula, especially from the Andalusia area, to help care for the hundreds of migrants who are arriving daily to the archipelago from the African continent. Last morning alone, more than 460 migrants arrived on the islands, including pregnant women and children.
In statements to Radio Nacional de España (RNE), collected by Europa Press, the regional head of the Red Cross Emergency Response Team (ERIE), José Antonio Rodríguez, has assured that the muscle of the NGO, volunteering, is already It does not give more of itself in the Canary Islands due to the massive arrival of people in canoes and boats.
José Antonio Rodríguez explained that until recently the NGO was moving its volunteers from one island to another in order to serve the migrants arriving in the Canary Islands, but it meant that at the moment they are arriving “anywhere” in the archipelago, which has forced to have to pull the muscle of the Red Cross central office.
Thus, it has called on those volunteers who want to come to the Canary Islands to provide their help, especially from the Andalusian area, where they are also working to confront this phenomenon and are trained to be able to care for all these people as quickly as possible. with dignity when they arrive to the islands, said the regional official.
The Lanzarote Security and Emergencies Consortium also calls for the creation of a body specialized in caring for trained and paid migrants. The manager of the Consortium, Enrique Espinosa, maintains that “you cannot resort to volunteering when paid professionals are really needed to do this work and care for these people with the best possible health benefits.”
He considers that volunteering is adequate to be able to face a specific situation, but he has stressed that the situation that the Canary Islands are currently experiencing with the phenomenon of migration is already a global problem. He considers that the creation of this specialized body is one of the requests that Minister Marlaska, who will be in Gran Canaria tomorrow, Monday, should make.
