SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Department of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the public company Turismo de Islas Canarias, will promote the archipelago as a professional sports training destination with a cycling challenge that will cross the eight islands in eight days and that will show the variety of roads , unevenness, landscapes and climates that the Canary Islands offers.

The 8 Islands Cycling Challenge project stars Lina Bo, a content creator focused on the development of the female cycling community, and Pol Tarrés, who has been a trail cycling professional and is currently a content creator of adventure travel focused on cycling. . With this initiative, Turismo de Canarias expects to achieve an impact of close to 875,000 impressions and 400,000 impacted users.

The communication objective will be to reinforce the positioning of the Canary Islands as a reference destination for professional sports tourism. “In 2022, 46% of the athletes who visited the islands did so for the first time, so it is a segment with high growth potential, hence the strong commitment that Turismo de Canarias makes to attract these visitors. “explained counselor Jéssica de León.

“Tourists who are very interesting for our strategy,” continued de León, “because they are characterized by enjoying long stays, which reduces our dependence on air connectivity, and they also spend more at the destination, thus promoting the development of infrastructure and technical services that also benefit sports on the islands.

42.6% of these visitors only hire accommodation, compared to 28.5% of the Canary Islands average, so they consume more in supermarkets, sports activities and tickets between islands. Furthermore, the sports tourist is characterized by his high economic capacity, since 29.3% have incomes greater than 75,000 euros, and a great travel activity, since he makes an average of five trips a year with an average of 15 days. of stay.

8 ISLANDS IN 8 DAYS

The 8 Islands Cycling Challenge project, which began this weekend in La Palma and La Gomera and will end on Sunday, October 8 in La Graciosa, pursues the objective of consolidating the islands as the ideal destination for the training of the best cyclists and world teams. To achieve this goal, Lina Bo and Pol Tarrés will pedal more than 900 kilometers and 22,100 meters of positive elevation gain in eight days while documenting their journey through the most iconic and demanding roads that serve as a training ground for the best cyclists in the world. year after year.

“This is a comprehensive project that will allow us to generate quality content from the eight islands for the sports segment and promote it in a non-intrusive and largely organic way, as it is disseminated through the social networks of its two protagonists,” explained the director. Manager of Tourism of the Canary Islands, José Juan Lorenzo.

The challenge can be followed live through their social networks while they cross the archipelago from La Palma to La Graciosa, the final stop where they will make the journey back to calm, highlighting another of the attributes of the islands that are fundamental for the attraction. of this type of tourists: environmental factors and natural elements that accelerate recovery and increase sports performance.
