The Cabildo invests a total of 2,543,966.74 euros in the expansion and urbanization project of the Vilaflor municipal cemetery, whose works have a completion period of 24 months. The Minister of Municipal Cooperation, Sonia Hernández, visited the works recently, together with the mayor of the municipality, Agustina Beltrán, with whom she analyzed the status of the works, which are currently being developed.

The execution project covers the expansion of the cemetery, and, more specifically, the building used as a funeral home, the area intended for the expansion of the cemetery and the exterior pedestrian accesses, as well as the new access from the TF-51 island road and the parking lot. inside. The work also involves the construction of new areas of niches and columbariums, a funeral home with two funeral rooms. Sonia Hernández explains that “the Cabildo launched this initiative as a demand from the City Council itself, which understood this work as a priority.” The works are 90% financed by the Cabildo, while the City Council finances 10%.

Last June, the Town Council had already announced that the work would begin during the summer, after the expansion of the cemetery was put out to tender twice, leaving the competition void. The intention of the insular Corporation is that the works will affect as little as possible, both to traffic and to the adjacent cemetery, which will continue to be used while the works continue. open air At that time, the Cabildo highlighted the fact that the project contemplated the construction of an underground parking lot inside the plot and a space on the roof of the funeral home furnished with benches, which would allow the celebration of masses or events outdoors. open air, “functioning, on a day-to-day basis, as a space for meditation.”

The current entrance will be transformed into a pedestrian path to guarantee access from the road, according to the information made public about the expansion and urbanization of the cemetery.
