The shocking image of rental scooters taking to the popular Castillo Street. We want to move

The electric scooters they have taken over the entire city of Santa Cruz in recent weeks. They have been seen lying inside the source of the García Sanabria Park, on some roads and also on the sidewalks. In the latter case, the image captured by the Association of People with and without Disabilities is shocking ‘We want to move’ in which it can be seen how the sides of the popular Calle Castillo are full of these vehicles, preventing or hindering the passage of people with reduced mobility and stealing space from pedestrians.

“This is unbearable”, describe from the aforementioned association, who also affirm that the situation “cannot be supported” despite the fact that a few days ago the Mayor of Santa Cruz made a publication on social networks stating that the surveillance and sanctions against non-compliance by users and companies of the scooters it would be older from now on.

However, from ‘We Want to Move’ they recall that Traffic makes clear in its regulations that sidewalks, parks and pedestrian areas are for pedestrians and demands that the Capital City Council “modify its municipal ordinance” contemplating the regulation of the parking of these devices.

“Among motorcycles, bicycles and electric scooters, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has become the most inaccessible city in the Canary Islands. And we must remedy this. Rental companies need to know that their rights end where those of citizens begin. It is no longer bearable to find, even, commercials offering the rent in the Plaza de España, in the eyes of some unit of the Local Police ”, they point out.

For the association, the solution is that “all these obstacles in the pedestrian areas must be removed (as the Mayor said). But they must be withdrawn and not remain in a Twitter message ”.

Likewise, they point out that the Ordinance should be modified and contemplate severe penalties that put an end to this abusive “business”, using public spaces that belong to all of us and vetoing the elderly and people with disabilities, the transit through its streets and squares. The Santa Cruz City Council must protect its citizens and ensure their safety ”.
