SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 7 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Deputy Minister of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alfonso Cabello, has agreed with the General Secretary for Social Transition and the 2030 Agenda of the Basque Government, Jonan Fernández Erdocia, to promote a space for collaboration between the two administrations to advance in the deployment of the Canary Islands 2030 Agenda in the meeting that both held last Tuesday in Vitoria, at the headquarters of the Presidency.

Alfonso Cabello was accompanied at the meeting by the general director of Organic Coordination and Strategic Projects of the Government of the Canary Islands, Octavio Caraballo, whose department will coordinate the 2030 Agenda.

The director of Social Innovation of the Basque Country, Asier Aranbarri, and a delegation from the universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna also participated.

The deputy minister assured, after the meeting with the Basque officials, that a space for dialogue and collaboration will be established between both parties to take advantage of the path that the Basque Government has taken, one of the most advanced in the deployment of the 2030 Agenda, and deal with to implement on the islands those successful projects that have contributed to improving governance and collaboration mechanisms between public administrations, universities, private companies and civil society.

“70% of the powers that affect the SDGs are in the hands of the autonomies and local administrations and our objective is to promote alliances not only with the Basque Country but with those other Autonomous Communities with which we can share experiences and knowledge. In this In this sense, the agreement with the Basque Country allows the opening of a direct line with the UN headquarters in Bilbao and which will be in charge of coordinating the implementation of the SDGs at the levels closest to the citizen,” Cabello said in a note.

The 2030 Canarian Agenda for Sustainable Development was officially presented in 2021 and, during 2022, the first year of its existence, efforts were focused on designing and putting into operation the governance and accountability structure established in the 2030 Canarian Agenda itself. .

The government program signed for the current legislature (2023-2027) represents a firm commitment to consolidate the steps that have been taken so far and to align the policies of the different departments with the SDGs.

In this legislature, the General Directorate of Coordination and Strategic Projects for the revitalization of the Canarian Agenda 2030 has been created in the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, under the umbrella of the Vice-Ministry of the Presidency.

“HIGH UNKNOWLEDGE”

The objective is to advance the work carried out, between 2019 and 2023, by the General Directorate of Research and Coordination of Sustainable Development.

Cabello pointed out, in this regard, that despite the steps that have been taken in recent years” there is a “high lack of knowledge” about the 2030 Agenda.

“It is essential, therefore, to improve its dissemination to add new allies, foster alliances and encourage the participation of all public and private actors. We already have a Canarian Agenda and an Action Plan, which ends in 2023, and now we It is appropriate to start a new path that implies a leap not only in the dissemination of its objectives but also in the search and addition of emblematic projects that embody the values of the sustainable development objectives”, he pointed out.

A new work plan that, according to Cabello, will soon be approved by the Government Council and agreed upon with the members of the Canary Islands Council for Sustainable Development.
