VALVERDE (EL HIERRO), 1 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The General Directorate of Children and Families of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families has expanded the first reception places to 200 to care for immigrant minors in El Hierro.
Until now the island had 140 places, located in the School Residence, to which, thanks to the collaboration with the Frontera City Council, 60 more places have been added in two municipal hostels.
The general director of the area, Sandra Rodríguez, visited the island this Thursday to learn first-hand about the situation of the minors who are in these devices and held a working meeting with the mayor of Frontera, Pablo Rodríguez Cejas, and the councilor of Social Services, Rocío Armas.
“I want to value the great work done by the collaborating entity that is responsible for assisting the minors we have under guardianship so that they are in the best possible conditions. Likewise, I want to thank the collaboration of the Frontera City Council, which has given us facilities to be able to expand resources. From the Ministry we understand that collaboration between administrations is essential to respond to the migration phenomenon, especially in more complex times, where arrivals intensify,” explained the director in a note.
Furthermore, in recent weeks the General Directorate has transferred around a hundred unaccompanied migrant minors to facilities located in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Currently, the Canary Islands has around 2,300 unaccompanied foreign minors under its guardianship, recalled the general director, who pointed out that “their care represents a considerable effort for this administration and it is urgent that mechanisms of interterritorial solidarity be articulated.”
Rodríguez took advantage of the visit to express his concern about the management that the central government is carrying out with the migrants who arrive on the island and who spend the first 72 hours in a sports center on the island.
