LA OROTAVA (TENERIFE), Aug. 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The acting Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has avoided taking a position this Thursday regarding the request of the Cabildo de Tenerife that the island have a permanent seaplane base to face possible forest fires but she has left the door open to “improve” in extinguishing services.
In statements to journalists on the occasion of a visit to Tenerife to assess the damage from the forest fire and thank the Military Emergency Unit (UME) for their work, he highlighted that the Ministry is “always improving” and trying to “do the best possible”.
In that sense, he appreciated that the Canary Islands “feel very proud” of the UME staff and the work carried out during the fire, which was “very difficult” and “very complicated”, to the point that they gain “many experiences” to the future.
Robles has pointed out that when there is a fire, apart from the lives of people and property, there is also “risk” for the workers of the extinguishing device and for this reason he has stressed the “enormous debt of gratitude” for everyone, both the professionals from the UME as well as from the rest of the bodies.
He has also said that all the members of the detachment “are Canaries”, which allows them to know the orography of the islands well, but he has not forgotten that many faced the “human drama” that there were homes close to the fire that belonged to their relatives. .
The minister has also emphasized the “great work” carried out by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo, which shows that “when there is a tragedy” all administrations work together with “effectiveness and professionalism.” “There are no political colors,” she added.
