PSOE and Popular Party (PP) in the Tenerife municipality of Arico, in the south of the island, have detailed this Wednesday the government pact reached two days ago by which the popular party joins the work of government and, in addition, its spokesperson , Andrés Celestino Martínez, will hold the Mayor’s Office during the last 18 months of the mandate. The PSOE was the party with the most votes on May 28, while the PP was in fourth position, with barely 12% of the votes.

Both parties consider that this agreement is “the best way” to give stability to the government during the four years of its mandate.
In this way, the only two elected councilors from the PP join the government, with Andrés Celestino Martínez as first deputy mayor, and Eudelia Pestano as third deputy mayor, and with the socialist Olivia Delgado at the head of the Mayor’s Office.
“The municipality needs a solid project that has all the Ariqueros and Ariqueras at the center of the policies, which has been materialized in this government agreement. Arico cannot wait four more years, it is time to make the municipality we want possible, the polls have spoken and the neighbors have expressed change,” declared Olivia Delgado in a joint statement sent by both parties.
Along these lines, Delgado indicated that they have worked on a government project that has established as priority objectives “the completion of the works on the Plaza de la Villa de Arico, solving the serious problems of sanitation and water supply, the paving of the streets and the approval of the General Plan.”
Under the pact, the Popular Party will direct the areas of Urban Planning and Planning, Equality, Sports, Youth, Employment and Local Development Agency, Tourism, Industry and Transport while the PSOE will lead the areas of Contracting, Human Resources and Internal Regime. Festivals, Culture, Social Welfare, Health, Health and Addictions, Works and Services, Environment and Primary Sector, Seniors, Citizen Security, Historical Heritage, Treasury, Employment and Housing. Specifically, the distribution is as follows:
The first deputy mayor will hold the areas of Works Planning and Urbanism; Sport and Youth; Ariam Stefany Álvarez Trujillo, second deputy mayor, will direct Employment; Public Services and Works; Parties; Hiring; Living place; Coasts and Ports; and Historical Heritage; Eudelia José Pestano Marrero will direct Citizen Participation; Tourism; Local and Economic Development; Equality; Industry and, finally, Transportation. Finally, the fourth deputy mayor, Agustín Zacarías Tejera Dorta, will direct the areas of Environment and Waste; Internal Regime; Social Welfare; Health, Sanitation and Addictions; Primary sector; Culture; Education; Animal welfare; And older.
For her part, the mayor, Olivia María Delgado Oval, will lead the areas of the Presidency; Institutional Relations; Citizen Security and Mobility; Area of Economy and Finance, Budgets and Municipal Heritage.
“The City Council is open to dialogue and contributions from residents, as well as to all constructive contributions that the rest of the political groups that make up the Plenary want to make. We want to do politics with you, so that you are participants in the decisions and the future of the municipality”, said the mayoress.
For his part, Andrés Martínez pointed out that after a few months of the formation of the plenary session, a programmatic agreement has been reached to meet the objectives set. “We formed a work team between the Popular Group and the PSOE, being aware that it will be a key legislature and that we will be a solid team, putting Arico before the rest of the factors,” he concluded.
Similar agreements in other parts of Tenerife
The discrepancies between popular and socialists when it comes to reaching an agreement to govern together at the national level are not reflected in smaller administrations, as is the case of Arico, but also other municipalities in Tenerife. This is the case of Tacoronte, where both govern with the Canarian Coalition; Granadilla de Abona, and La Guancha.
