SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug. 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The spokesman for the Government of the Canary Islands, Alfonso Cabello, stated this Monday that there is no “risk of shortages” of potatoes on the islands but there is a “market adjustment” that will end next week as a result of the ban on importing potatoes from England being affected by the plague of the ‘Colorado Beetle’.

In a press conference to give an account of the agreements of the Governing Council, he has assessed that the control mechanisms have worked since “it would be a tremendous risk” to introduce the plague into the archipelago, hence the importation has been closed.

For this reason, it has indicated that importers have begun to mobilize containers from Israel, Cyprus, Egypt, Libya and Malta, mainly, and the market is expected to operate “normally” during the next week.

Cabello has indicated that the Minister of Agriculture, Narvay Quintero, “has been on top of the matter” throughout the weekend and does not see the need to introduce any control measure because “the market is self-regulating.”
