SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Gofio Gomero de Millo, produced by Rayco Herrera under the Protected Geographical Indication ‘Gofio Canario’, has been awarded the Best Gofio of the Canary Islands award by the professional tasting panel of the 2023 Official Agrocanarias Contest.
In addition, this mill has received different medals in different categories and the distinction of Best Local Grain Gofio of the contest for this same production, as well as the one awarded by the jury of older people for its Ideal 5 of wheat, millet, barley, oats and chickpeas. (IGP Gofio Canario), also awarded a Great Gold Medal, as reported by the Canarian Department of Agriculture in a press release.
The director of the Canarian Institute for Agri-Food Quality, Luis Arráez, reported on Monday the award-winning productions and stressed that this action seeks to “encourage the consumption of this product and help millers in the marketing of a healthy product, with high nutritional value and closely linked to Canarian culture and a sign of identity for all” Canarians.
He added that the Ministry of Agriculture seeks to “value” the gofio so that it “returns to being a very important food” in the diet of the Canaries and in that of “all those people” who visit the archipelago.
In this edition of the contest, held in El Hierro, 93 gofios from 18 mills from the seven islands have participated and a total of 23 prizes have been awarded: 18 medals (8 Silver Medals, 6 Golds and 4 Great Golds) and five distinctions .
To this end, two tasting days have been developed, with a panel made up of 16 expert tasters who have selected, through the blind tasting system (without knowing which productions were valued), the Great Gold Medal and the Gold and Silver Medals , in addition to the special distinctions ‘Best Gofio de Canarias’, ‘Best Gofio de Grano Local’, ‘Best Image and Presentation’ and those awarded by the juries for children and the elderly.
Thus, Molino de Gofio Imendi (IGP Gofio Canario, produced by ADRISUL SL in La Gomera) obtains children’s recognition for its production of wheat and millet, as well as a Great Gold Medal, and La Molina de la Asomada Trigo Barbilla roasted over wood ( by Francisco Román Cabrera Oramas, Fuerteventura), the one for Best Image and Presentation.
In the wheat category, the winners were Gofio Gomero (IGP. Great Gold Medal); La Escalona, prepared by Carmen María Tacoronte Moreno in Tenerife (Gold Medal); Imendi Spelled Gofio Mill (IGP. Gold Medal); Molino de Gofio Imendi (IGP. Silver Medal), and Gofio Gomero de Espelta (IGP. Silver Medal).
In the millet modality, the awards are divided between La Molina José María Gil of local grain, from Lanzarote (Gold); Molino de Gofio Imendi of local grain (PGI. Silver) and Gofio La Escalona of local grain (Silver).
In addition, JC Molino de Gofio Granadilla, produced by Semidán Casanova Marrero in Tenerife, and Comeztier, from Cafés Careca SL, have been awarded a Silver and Gold Medal, respectively in the wheat and millet category.
Finally, in the gofio modality made with cereals and/or legumes or their mixtures other than the above, four products from Molino de Gofio Imendi have been awarded: three Cereals (Silver), four Cereals and Chickpea (Silver), three Cereals and Chickpea (Gold) and seven Cereals and legumes (Gold).
In this same group, two Gofio Gomero productions have been distinguished: wheat, millet and barley (Silver), and Special 10 (Great Gold Medal).
