Tenerife is promoted as a golf destination in 25 countries

Tenerife will host for the second consecutive year the final of the most important corporate golf tournament in the world. The vice president of the Cabildo and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, highlights the importance of the event to promote the Island as a destination for this

The decisive days of the World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC) return to the Island and on some very special dates as the event celebrates its thirtieth edition this year. The event will bring together some 250 participants and guests from more than 25 countries from October 2 to 6. It also contemplates the celebration, in parallel, of the Sports Legends Cup, a competition that during those same days will bring together relevant national and international sports figures around golf.

The vice-president of the Cabildo de Tenerife and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, highlighted the importance of the event as a promotional instrument for the Island, with special emphasis on its character as a golf destination, “since it places Tenerife at the same level as the places where It has been held previously, as is the case in Cascais (Portugal), Fancourt (South Africa), Montego Bay (Jamaica) or Loch Lomond (Scotland), among others.

Ability

Lope Afonso indicates that “hosting the final of this tournament means recognizing the great capacity of Tenerife to organize top-level events.” The counselor stressed that “it will have the presence of players representing the main companies from around the world, who will have the opportunity to get to know not only some of the excellent courses that we have, but all the complementary offer of our Island.”

More than a tournament

The CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, David Pérez, adds that the event “is much more than a golf tournament”. It emphasizes that combining social and cultural activities, as well as visits and excursions that will allow attendees to discover the natural spaces, the gastronomy or the charm of the cities and towns of the Island. Pérez, who shows his conviction of the great impression that the destiny will cause among the participants, specifies that the tournament is presented “as a great occasion, as it already happened in the successful edition last year, to show the first-class accommodations”, specially prepared to meet the needs of the players, with its spas and wellness centers, or the offer of different activities such as whale watching and stargazing, to mention just a few of them.

return to the island

From the WCGC its president, José Guerra, expresses his satisfaction at the fact that Tenerife will once again host the final of the tournament. He points out that “we want to celebrate our 30th anniversary in a magnificent place like Tenerife”. He recalls that “last year’s world final was a great success, and all attendees were impressed by the level of golf, but, above all, by the tourism on the Island.” Guerra stated that “I would like to especially thank the work of the Cabildo and Turismo de Tenerife for making this event a reality.” The head of the tournament stressed that “the 30th anniversary of the World Corporate Golf Challenge is a unique occasion to honor the history and legacy of this event while continuing to strengthen relationships and celebrate the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship in the business world.” .

Together with the World Corporate Golf Challenge, the Sports Legends Cup, which will take place at Abama Golf, will attract characters recognized by the public to the Island during the same days, which according to the insular Corporation considers “should positively influence the promotion of the destination through an event that especially enhances its playful nature”. Athletes, VIP business guests and media representatives from around the world will participate in this parallel tournament to the World Corporate Golf Challenge final.

Over the years, the teams have been captained by Ryder Cup legends such as Tony Jacklin CBE, Manuel Piñero, Ronan Rafferty or Eddie Polland; the tennis player Francisco Pato Clavet; the Portuguese international soccer players Luis Figo and the goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira; Welshman Mark Hughes, ex-Madridistas Carlos Santillana, Uli Stielike and Isidoro San José; or the great Brazilian scorer Antonio Careca who was part of the best Napoli in history led by the Argentine star Diego Armando Maradona.

The World Corporate Golf Challenge is an event that extends beyond the golf courses. In this sense, players will have the opportunity to participate in social and cultural activities to discover the natural beauty of Tenerife, enjoy the local gastronomy and immerse themselves in the culture and tourist attractions of the Island. A unique opportunity to show the beauty and hospitality of a unique destination.

A first level field

The WCGC will be held at Golf Costa Adeje, an ideal setting for the sport of 18 holes, which already hosted last year’s final and is the regular venue for major international tournaments. A field that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year in October. The final of this tournament is the culmination on the Island of qualifying events that have been held in different countries. In its 30-year history, the World Corporate Golf Challenge has been consolidating itself as the benchmark golf tournament for companies, which is corroborated by the million golfers from more than fifty countries who have taken part in it in these three decades. . The choice of Tenerife for the second consecutive year is an incentive for an Island that has tourism as its great engine economic. An engine that has shown signs of recovery in recent months after the pandemic. | JDM
