The Icod de Los Vinos City Council has started this Thursday, July 13, the emergency work on the slope from the cliff of San Marcos beach, in order to prevent new landslides from occurring. The Council clarifies that The rockfall that occurred this Thursday is precisely due to the start of the cleaning work on the slope, “which is totally controlled“, so it sends a message of tranquility to neighbors and visitors.
Municipal sources point out that the emergency action that the City Council will carry out these days on the slope of the San Marcos beach consists of carrying out containment and maintenance works on it. “First of all, loose stones are being removed, that there are many, hence the landslides that, we insist, are fully controlled”. The forecast of the Consistory is that this work, processed by the emergency route and awarded to the Tacande company, the same one that works for the Cabildo de Tenerife on the slopes of the TF-5 (Autopista del Norte), is completed in about five days.
The local Corporation recalls that the slope is on private property but, even so, the City Council has decided to intervene to guarantee the safety of people and property, although the cost of the works will have to be assumed by the owners. “In a first phase, we are carrying out the cleaning of the slope, but a second phase will have to be carried out to protect the slope. The important thing now is that the risk of landslides be eliminated.”
The mayor of Icod, javier sierraheld a meeting this week with the residents affected in the area of Avenida Marítima de San Marcos, in which the councilors for Works and Security, Jorge gonzalez and Óscar Machado, respectively, as well as municipal technicians. The councilor explained that to carry out the work, the company’s technicians will climb down the slope and use mechanical and protective procedures.
During the days that the intervention lasts, the part closest to the slope of the avenue is sealed and it will not be possible to travel through the area that is marked out. The residents of the building located next to the slope must take extreme precautions in windows and terraces due to possible landslides and production of dust clouds.
This urgent action is carried out as a result of the occurrence of three landslides on the hillside in the last few daysin which, fortunately, there have been no personal or material damages.
