Neotrópico Foundation rescues two turtles in Tenerife

Fundación Neotrópico rescued this Wednesday, July 12, two turtles abandoned in different parts of the island of Tenerifewhich are in the recovery center.

One of them is a trachemys scripta scriptathe American yellow-eared turtle, which was located in the Tenerife Environmental Complex (CAT), and the second, a trachemys scripta elegansa red-eared turtle, was found in an abandoned irrigation pond in Adeje, as reported by Neotrópico through its social networks.

Tenerife Environmental Complex

The Foundation received an alert about the discovery of a live specimen of the yellow-eared tortoise from the CAT, where the island’s waste is processed. Specifically, the animal was located on the container classification tape.

Simpromi personnel working in the environmental compound were the ones who found the turtle mixed in with the plastic containers. And just before going to the compaction press, it was able to be rescued.

Adeje irrigation pond

In the municipality of Adeje a situation similar to the previous one occurred. In this case, the Foundation received a call alerting them to the location of a water turtle in an abandoned and semi-dry irrigation pond.

The organization’s staff traveled to the place and were able to capture the tortoise, a red-eared turtle.

In this case, the animal suffered a series of risks, since the bottom of the pond was covered by a thick layer of silt and mud that makes movement difficult and poses a danger of suffocation if the depth is significant.

Both are species listed as invasive aliens in Royal Decree 630/2013 and they meet under animal health surveillance guarded at the facilities of the Fauna Recovery Center of the Neotrópico Foundation.

From Fundación Neotrópico they make it clear that they continue to work for the protection of Canarian nature, research, conservation of biodiversity, animal welfare, awareness and environmental education, in addition to fighting against illegal wildlife trafficking.
