Three landslides force to reinforce the cliff of the beach of San Marcos

The Icod de Los Vinos Town Hall has commissioned emergency work on the cliff of San Marcos beach after the three landslides that took place last weekend and which, despite their appearance, did not cause damage to people or property. This was confirmed yesterday by the new mayor of the Icodense City Council, Javier Sierra, who clarified that the invoice for the cost of these works will be passed on to the owners of the land, since that cliff is privately owned.

The first fall of stones took place on the night of Friday to Saturday, at about 00:30. The City Council ordered the immediate transfer to the area of fire units and the Local Police to evaluate what happened. Two other landslides occurred on Sunday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The affected area of the promenade had already been cordoned off for years due to other stone falls that occurred on this cliff that overlooks San Marcos beach.

After the three landslides last weekend, the delimitation was extended to a part of the promenade that is located at the foot of an apartment building, on the ground floor of which there is a cafeteria and a terrace. The mayor revealed that they learned that these lands are privately owned after a consultation with the Cabildo de Tenerife. “Even so, to guarantee the safety of people, we have decided to intervene urgently,” Javier Sierra made clear.

The company of the TF-5

The Icod de Los Vinos City Council quickly contacted the same company that is carrying out the work to reinforce the embankments of the TF-5 North motorway, between San Juan de la Rambla and Los Realejos, to make a first analysis of the situation. These professionals have decided to first remove the stones that may be loose and act in the areas most at risk, which they will begin to do imminently, to reduce the immediate danger of new landslides. They will also carry out a more detailed study of the slope to determine what other actions are needed, in particular the placement of protective metal mesh and other reinforcing structures that minimize the risk of new avalanches that may affect residents or visitors to the area.

Javier Sierra specified that the costs of these works will be passed on to the owners of the land. «The priority is to face the necessary works to reduce the danger and guarantee the safety of people. Everything will be done in coordination with the owners of the land, but they are jobs that they have to pay for because the maintenance of the slopes is under their responsibility,” stressed the new mayor of the Icodens municipality.

The reform of the beach

Javier Sierra also announced that the reinforcement of this cliff will be carried out taking into account the actions planned for the recovery of the San Marcos beach, which the mayor himself wants to improve and expedite so that “Icodenses enjoy the beach they deserve and what Also, do it safely.” The remodeling of this entire bathing area requires the addition of sand, the construction of garden areas and the improvement of access. To this will be added the reinforcement of the slopes.
