The citizen commission promoting the legislative initiative against volcanic catastrophesformed by victims of the 2021 eruption in the Aridane Valley, continues its collection of signatures, that has been developed in the last week in different municipalities of The Palm, Tenerife and Gran Canariaand this Monday begins in Fuerteventurato continue this week in Lanzarote. So far 10,000 signatures have been collected.

The number of supports that this popular legislative initiative already has, whiche aims to guarantee the right to socioeconomic recovery of the population affected by these natural disastersencourages the citizens that they have undertaken this task, which must be completed before the end of August. They must collect 15,000 valid signatures from residents in Canary Islands over 18 years of age for the Canarian Parliament to debate and put the proposed articles to a vote.

12,000 affected in the Islands

In the past days and weeks notaries and collaborators of the commission promoting the legislative initiative have obtained support in the streets and squares of La Palma, Tenerife, on the 7th and 8th, Gran Canaria, so, with the locations planned this week, signatures will have already been collected on 5 islands. It is also intended to visit The iron, La Gomera and even the gracefuland intensify the collection of signatures in Tenerife at the end of July and beginning of August with a tour of numerous municipalities on the island of Teide.

This citizen initiative arises after verifying the lack of express legislation for volcanic catastrophes like the one that occurred almost two years ago in La Palmawhich forced the evacuation of 7,000 people (there are still 1,300 evicted from Puertos Naos and La Bombilla) and has directly affected more than 12,000, with more than 3,000 buildings destroyed by the lava, of which more than 1,400 were homes, and more than 300 hectares of agriculture in production. The text proposed for this law against volcanic catastrophes can be read in its entirety on the web page on this ILP https://www.ilpvolcanescanarias.es/.
