The local government board City Hall of La Laguna approved, in its session last Tuesday, the agreement to grant a subsidy of 45,000 euros in favor of Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Ranchers of the Canary Islands (COAG) to continue, and expand, with the project Impulsando el green change in the agricultural activity Township.
Its purpose is to promote a more sustainable agricultural sector, characterized by greater respect for the environment and a better quality of life for farmers and ranchers, governed by the guidelines set by agroecology, as stated in the file.
Thus, from COAG Canarias they explained that this is the third year of operation of the program in the municipality, which has been improved “with some new lines of action, for example, we are going to work to promote associations to try to market them jointly, and every time we try to complement it more with the actions that the City Council has, such as the promotion of direct sales points”. And, in addition, the number of participants is consolidated and expanded, “we started the project at the time with between 15 and 20 producers and the idea is that by the end of the year we will be close to 40”, they pointed out.
A project that was born, they explained, after a diagnosis of the situation of the sector for its reorientation towards production systems more compatible with the environment, and from there “it was identified that it would be interesting to accompany the producers on this path and for this reason they raised this project.
In order to achieve these objectives, it is proposed to carry out several lines of action, such as assistance and technical advice, with visits to the different farms of the program, making the pertinent recommendations to facilitate a reorientation of the modes of production towards agroecological-based systems, complemented with a permanent and continuous contact.
In addition, the holding of group workshops to address key issues, the promotion of common groups of agroecological interest in different areas of the municipality or the performance of soil and water analyzes are contemplated.
Likewise, an individualized diagnosis will be made on compliance with criteria for ecological certification; synergies will be sought with initiatives of the La Laguna strategy, a municipality in transition, and technical assistance will be offered to promote associationism.
