The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council Sports Service, directed by Alicia Cebrián, will launch for the first time in the municipality, initiation courses to surfing as part of the summer sports campaign offer. The objective is to make it possible for all young people between the ages of 8 and 17 to learn this modality, promoting the initiation to surfing safely, from July 3 to September 1.

In principle, 90 young people between the ages of 8 and 17 are expected to participate, 10 each week. The first week, from July 3 to 7, will be dedicated to boys and girls in vulnerable situations, with a 100% discount on the price of the course, to give them the opportunity to learn a new sport.

The duration of each course is 5 days, with 1 hour 30 minutes per day, with both theoretical and technical classes. In addition, the Sports area of the City Council will provide a soft surfboard, mooring and lycra during the development of the activity, which must coincide with low tide, for its normal development.

The Councilor for Sports, Alicia Cebrián, pointed out that “it will be mandatory to know how to swim, since it is necessary to know how to function in the water to carry out this activity” and added that “Santa Cruz has a very extensive natural space that is underused, its coast, to which we add that, as a result of the closure of CIDEMAT, citizens have been deprived of enjoying the sea”.

The mayor of Santa Cruz pointed out that “the Sports Service is working to reverse this situation and at least offer some sea sport. In this case we have worked so that the smallest and youngest have an experience in surfing, a sport that is practiced outdoors that is so beautiful, so complete on a physical level and so much fun”.

Alicia Cebrián highlighted that “the City Council has never offered a surf course before, and I am convinced that it will be a success and that next summer we will have to expand the offer.”

Finally, the councilor from Santa Cruz explained that “we are encouraged to take this course to broaden the range of sports activities and thus increase the different options for practicing sports. We want to offer variety in Santa Cruz, current and modern sport, typical of the 21st century”.

The cost of the activity per week ranges from 46 euros for the general public; 34.50 for young people with a disability greater than 33% and members of a large family, as well as 11.50 euros for special large families and 16.00 euros for minors in official reception centers and with a bonus for young people in social exclusion .

For registration and more information, the Sports Service provides the following contact channels, such as the website www.santacruzentrena.es; telephone number 609 74 22 13 and email address info@santacruzentrena.es.
