SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena, has activated the alert for maximum temperatures on the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

As detailed by the Executive in a note, the temperatures may
exceed 37ºC in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and slightly lower values ​​on the island of Lanzarote.

The heat episode will begin this Tuesday in the midlands of Gran Canaria, while on the coasts it will mainly affect the southern and western slopes.

From Wednesday the heat will spread to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where it will mainly affect areas inland on these islands.

According to the prediction of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) up to five municipalities of Gran Canaria –Agüimes, Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana and Aldea de San Nicolás– will be on red warning due to high temperatures from next Tuesday and until Thursday while those of Artenara, Ingenio, Santa Brígida, Tejeda, Telde, Valsequillo and Vega de San Mateo will be on orange notice.


In the case of Tenerife, it will be Arona, Granadilla de Abona, La Orotava, San Miguel de Abona and Vilaflor that are under orange notice this Tuesday and Wednesday; in Fuerteventura, the municipality of Pájara, on the same days, plus Antigua, Puerto del Rosario and Tuineje on yellow notice while in Lanzarote it will be San Bartolomé and Tías that are on yellow notice.

The Government of the Canary Islands has also decreed the alert for the risk of forest fires in El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, on this island specifically from elevation 200 upwards in the north of the island and from elevation 400 up in the west, south and east.

Apart from the high temperatures on these islands, winds will blow that may be strong on the peaks, plus a progressive entry of
haze in the middle and high altitudes, especially on the island of Tenerife.
