Tenerife It will have an insular network for bird watching. The Cabildo awarded the drafting of the first phase of a project for a global value of 3.4 million euros that will adapt trails, viewpoints and recreational areas of the Island for this purpose. The acting insular director of Tourism, Laura Castro, recalls that The objective is to have the necessary facilities and equipment for bird watching. The first impulse has a cost of 304,907 euros.

Castro values the need to offer “a homogeneous image that values our landscape and natural resources, in addition to preserving the territory and its biodiversity. He recalls that the initiative has been scheduled in three phases, to be carried out between 2023 and 2027. This first, which has an execution period of eleven months, will be divided into four lots.

Endorsed by the EU

The actions are part of the Tenerife Reset project, within the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plans Program, financed with Next Generation European funds, granted to the Cabildo de Tenerife. The bird watching network aims to catalog and promote priority places to intervene based on their ornithological interest, their tourist potential and their connections with complementary products such as hiking or astrotourism.

fourteen spaces

Specifically, the paths of Monte del Agua, Costa de Los Silos and Charcas de Erjos (Los Silos) will be improved and adapted; Las Lagunetas (El Rosario-Tacoronte-Candelaria); the Malpaís de Güímar and El Cabezo (El Médano). In the same way, the recreational areas of La Caldera (La Orotava) will be conditioned; Rockrose loin (Tacoronte); Las Lajas (Vilaflor) and Chío (Guía de Isora), as well as the viewpoints of Pico del Inglés (Santa Cruz), Los Poleos (Santiago del Teide) and La Grimona and El Lance (Los Realejos).

The actions to complete the infrastructures must meet the criteria of accessibility, signage, quality, guarantee of maintenance and integration.

Antecedent in La Punta

The gray plover, the gray heron or the common tern. These are some of the species that appear on the information panels of the bird observation post –a precedent of this project– installed on the San Juanito trail, on the coast of La Punta del Hidalgo, in December 2021. It was promoted by the Ministry Regional Ecological Transition, through the Biodiversity Service, and in collaboration with the City Council of La Laguna. Now, the Cabildo de Tenerife intends to give the idea a much broader content and give it the shape of an insular network.
