The IDAE presents the call for aid to the energy transition to the hotel sector of the Canary Islands

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) has brought together this Thursday in Tenerife representatives of the hotel sector of the Canary Islands to publicize in situ the characteristics of the call for aid for the energy transition in the archipelago launched last 1 June by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).

This line of incentives, endowed with 84.9 million euros of Next Generation funds channeled through the PRTR, aims to promote initiatives related to energy storage and network security, as well as green hydrogen production facilities, offshore wind power and other energies of the sea with the purpose of advancing towards a 100% decarbonized system in the island environment.

The technical conference was inaugurated by the president of ASHOTEL and CEAT, Jorge Marichal, together with Carmen González, from Oficinas Verdes de Canarias, and Luis García Benedicto, head of the Demand Management and Integration of Renewables Department at IDAE.

From their respective fields of action, the three have highlighted the opportunities posed by the energy transition in environments lacking connections with the peninsular networks, and the need to accelerate the implementation of renewables and storage in sectors of such relevance as the hotel, as guarantee of supply in substitution of generation with fossil sources.

In this sense, García Benedicto has highlighted that the penetration of renewables “is not only about installing power, but also having systems that allow us to manage it to achieve a fully decarbonised system”. And he has encouraged the hotel sector to present their projects to this call for aid.

The meeting, held in Adeje, has also had the participation of experts from the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC), promoters, installers and business development managers from the Canarian hotel and industrial sector, among others.

In the round tables, cases of good practices in the implementation of different renewable energy projects with integrated storage have been analyzed and, later, the attendees have toured the solar installations of the GF Gran Costa Adeje hotel, of the Fedola Group, venue of the conference, that exemplify this commitment to self-sufficiency and sustainability.

URBAN OR INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS

The IDAE, dependent on the Secretary of State for Energy of MITECO, is the managing body for aid from the Islands programme. The line of incentives for the Canary Islands prioritizes projects that are developed in urban or industrial environments to mitigate the environmental impact and the access of small players to the electricity market with initiatives of lower power, promoting distributed generation.

Within the framework of the call -which will remain open until July 28-, the initiatives that will be the object of aid will bet especially on the incorporation of storage systems, both in existing facilities and in others repowered or technologically renovated, as well as in new renewable generation facilities, which may include the production of hydrogen. In addition, the deployment of photovoltaic projects will be promoted on anthropized surfaces or in areas of human activity, new electricity production plants with biogas or mini-hydraulics.

Given that the islands have isolated electrical networks, the incorporation of storage will allow the evaluation and demonstration of its potential as an axis of integration of renewable energies to achieve a fully decarbonized system. According to the bases of the call, between 40% and 65% of the investment made may be subsidized and the IDAE may advance the funds to the beneficiaries. Applications must be submitted through the IDAE electronic headquarters.
